Constipation is one of those problems everyone deals with at some point. fewer than three bowel movements a week, hard stools, and that heavy, uncomfortable feeling that just won't quit. It can come from dehydration, low fiber intake, stress, a sedentary routine, pregnancy, or simply a change in your daily schedule.
The good news: most cases respond well to simple, natural fixes you can start today. Here are seven remedies worth keeping in your back pocket, along with two easy recipes.
Note: if constipation lasts more than three weeks or comes with severe pain or blood in your stool, get medically checked rather than relying on home care.
1. Start With Water — and Try Chia Water
Dehydration is one of the biggest hidden causes of constipation. Your colon pulls water from waste to keep the body hydrated, which leaves stools hard and difficult to pass. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day.
For an extra boost, chia seeds swell in liquid and add gentle bulk to stool.
Chia Water Recipe
1 tsp chia seeds
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 cup warm water
Honey to taste (optional)
Stir the chia seeds and lemon juice into the water. Let it sit for 15 minutes so the seeds swell, then stir again and drink. You can also prepare this the night before as a chia pudding for breakfast.
2. Load Up on Fiber-Rich Foods
Fiber bulks up stool and helps it move through the digestive tract. Soluble fiber (oats, apples, bananas, barley, beans) absorbs water and softens stool, while insoluble fiber (whole grains, leafy greens, root vegetables, nuts, and seeds) speeds up transit time. A mix of both works best.
Kiwi deserves special mention here, eating two kiwis a day has been shown to increase bowel movement frequency and ease abdominal discomfort, even for people with sensitive digestion. Prunes work similarly, thanks to natural sorbitol that draws water into the gut.
3. Try Fennel Seed Tea
Fennel seeds relax the intestinal muscles and support digestion, making them a gentle option for occasional constipation.
Fennel Tea Recipe
1 tsp fennel seeds, crushed
1 cup hot water
Add the crushed seeds to hot water, cover, and steep for 5 minutes. Strain and drink.
4. Move Your Body
Even light activity; a 15–20 minute walk, some yoga, or a short dance session, increases blood flow to the abdomen and helps push waste through the intestines faster. You don't need an intense workout; consistency matters more than intensity.
5. Feed Your Gut With Probiotics
A healthy balance of gut bacteria supports regular bowel movements. Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kombucha all introduce beneficial bacteria that can ease constipation over time. Start with small servings, since too much too quickly can cause bloating or cramping.
6. Reach for Natural Laxative Foods
Certain foods have a mild, natural laxative effect and work well as part of a daily routine:
Prunes, raisins, and figs
Rye bread (shown to outperform white and whole wheat for improving transit)
Sesame seeds and licorice root
Foods rich in healthy fats, like avocado and flaxseed
A warm cup of milk with a teaspoon of ghee before bed
7. Consider Herbal Support
Senna is a well-known herbal laxative that stimulates the bowel. It can be effective for short-term relief but isn't meant for regular, long-term use, overuse can lead to cramping or diarrhea.
