For context, most over-the-counter fish oil capsules list "1,000 mg fish oil" on the label, but that's the weight of the oil itself, not the actual EPA and DHA content, which is usually somewhere between 300 and 500 mg. It's worth flipping the bottle over and checking the actual numbers rather than assuming the front label tells the full story.

The evidence for supporting cardiovascular health in at-risk individuals, easing inflammation, and contributing to brain and eye development is genuinely solid. Where the science gets softer- general cognitive enhancement in healthy people, skin benefits, cancer prevention; it's worth staying curious rather than convinced.
If you're already eating fatty fish a couple of times a week, you may not need a supplement at all. If you're not, a modest daily dose backed by your doctor's input is a reasonable, low-risk way to close the gap.
